Dad served on the USCGC Polar Sea (WAGB-11), home port of Seattle. Per my dad they used black golf balls and had the shotgun ready in case of polar bears. Group photo, he is second from the right.

I was surprised at first that they were allowed to take a shotgun on the CG vessel, but bear protection makes sense. Although that weapon might not be my first choice for that.
